This weekend I 'rescued' a Croatian hitchhiker who was hitchhiking through Denmark when she was surprised by one of the biggest headaches for hitchhikers: the rain! Having her here was as good for her as it was for myself. She brought me feelings that I didn't have for ages since I moved to here.
I'm living in a small room where it is generally quite uncomfortable to host people, but at the moment that I read the post of this girl asking for help on a Facebook group of hitchhikers, a friend immediately offered his house for me to host her there with more comfort, to "rescue" her from that situation. But I'm sure she wouldn't mind about how much space or how comfort the place I had to offer was, in anyways.
She was carrying about three backpacks which with the additional weight of the water that made everything inside get wet, resulted in some ultra-heavy weights! Not to mention how tired she probably was after days on the road traveling hundreds of miles since she left Spain towards Denmark.
It was Friday and my friend was going to travel during the weekend. He said he could leave his house key with me so that I could shelter her there. And so I immediately replied her request:
This group was created by myself when I moved here to the country. There was already another group of hitchhikers but its title and main language was Danish, so I knew that foreigners who are just passing by wouldn't be able to find it and ask for help when needed. So there was this lack of a more "findable" group with an English title. Therefore the new group created has finally helped at least one person. :-)
When I answered the help request, I had already planned to go with my friends to a bar. So by private message, i sent the bar address and my friend’s address. I told her that if she arrived until 2ma she would meet me at the bar, after, she could meet me at my friend's house. She had been traveling without a mobile, and basically no money. She carries a half-broken netbook, which thanks to the WiFi of a petrol station she could post a request for help.
Few hours later I was at the bar with my friends and she arrives! Looked super tired, and those backpacks were so heavy that I was sorry for her column. lol
Alica, the croatian hitchhiker who had not even a photo of her face on her Facebook profile, found me there in the bar. She sat down with us, duly welcomed by me and my Brazilian friends. At first I had thought she was spanish, because she was coming from Spain, but then she said she was from Croatia (one of my first destinations in my next major travel here in Europe).
From the bar we went home, where she could hang their wet clothes, take a shower and sleep in a room just for her. My friend was so nice and made his home available for it.
The next day, as my friend had no washing machine and she had no money to pay for the laundry, she wanted to wash their clothes by hand and hang. I thought this cool, but I took her to the laundry and I managed to take her back home with clean clothes. :-)
Actually the laundry ended up being fun for us, because I had never been there and most of the information on the wall were in Danish (I still understand very little of the language). We went out there pushing the buttons and everything worked. I had to make a video. lol
At night, we went hunting and came home with a bag full of things to eat, which gave us a great dinner. Besides the dinner, she still ended up with food in her backpack to take on their next travel days. :)
Receive Alica gave me a very good feeling, a feeling that I never had to get another CouchSurfers I had received at home since I moved here. She did not thought about spend time in Odense, but ended up staying here in town with me. If not for your style of traveling, we probably would not have met. And your stay here certainly would not have caused as much impact caused. It was nothing, however any little thing it was, it would be much. The concept of "kindness" is something very different here in Denmark, since everyone has money so basically nobody needs nobody. I missed this, I missed being able to help.
Otherwise, on Sunday in addition to share our lunch and chat, she spent a few hours sitting in front of a map pointing to places and telling me things about cities in the Baltic countries (Croatia and surroundings). By coincidence, I will hitchhiking there in August with my friend who left his home available for us here in Odense. I ended up learning the first things about this region of the planet that I barely knew anything about. She even showed some cities where she has friends who are staying in case we need. :)
In the late afternoon of Sunday, Alica put their backpacks and went again.
Evaristo, thanks for giving your home, you were so kind as me. Because of my "frustrations" with other guests I had in my house, I do not know if all this would have been as it was.
Thanks Alica for be like this way on the road, allowing me the chance to have met, and re-awaken all my feeling and "hope" in humanity. Everyone knows I'm an atheist, but this kind of thing I usually say that hitchhikers are "angels" who fall into our lives in moments that are so unexpected for them as for us.
Kindness echoing kindness..
I'm super excited for my next trip!
